Home loan expert tips

Laine GordonIf you've had your home loan for more than a year, chances are you're on a higher rate than someone who has refinanced.
There are a few simple ways you can save thousands of dollars on your mortgage, and it might be easier than you think.
  • Check your rate: take 5 minutes to get your ducks in a row. Check what rate you're paying, what your bank is offering new customers so that you have a benchmark from which to negotiate.
  • Compare at least two options: do a quick search to see what rates are on offer for comparable home loans.
  • Call: By all means pick up the phone and haggle with your lender, but the sharpest rates are typically reserved for new customers. No matter how good your negotiating skills are, it's worth considering switching to a new lender.
Plenty of people think refinancing is not worth the effort, until they actually take the plunge and then kick themselves for not having done it earlier.

^Words such as "top", "best", "cheapest" or "lowest" are not a recommendation or rating of products. This page compares a range of products from selected providers and not all products or providers are included in the comparison. There is no such thing as a 'one- size-fits-all' financial product. The best loan, credit card, superannuation account or bank account for you might not be the best choice for someone else. Before selecting any financial product you should read the fine print carefully, including the product disclosure statement, target market determination fact sheet or terms and conditions document and obtain professional financial advice on whether a product is right for you and your finances.
