Personal loans expert tips

Laine GordonA personal loan can be a smart way to get the finance you need for an investment, an event, or help you clear credit card debt that you’re struggling to get rid of. However, finding the right personal loan to fit your finances comes with a few steps:
  • Check the rate is competitive: Getting a great interest rate on your loan will help reduce your repayments - make sure to do your research and compare across a number of lenders.
  • Review the features: Do you want a loan that allows you to make extra repayments, or even pay it out early? Not all lenders will give you that flexibility, so make sure to review all the features given to you.
  • Put it to practise in your budget: Once you have an idea of what your repayments could be, make sure it works into your budget.
  • Factor in the fees: Alongside your repayments, you’ll be charged fees by the lender. Make sure to read the PDS and TMD of your loan to understand exactly what that could be.

^Words such as "top", "best", "cheapest" or "lowest" are not a recommendation or rating of products. This page compares a range of products from selected providers and not all products or providers are included in the comparison. There is no such thing as a 'one- size-fits-all' financial product. The best loan, credit card, superannuation account or bank account for you might not be the best choice for someone else. Before selecting any financial product you should read the fine print carefully, including the product disclosure statement, target market determination fact sheet or terms and conditions document and obtain professional financial advice on whether a product is right for you and your finances.
