New figures released show that Australians remain loyal to Toyota, as the Japanese carmaker once again sold the highest volume of vehicles in January 2022, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

Toyota saw 15,33 vehicles sold in January alone, with two models sitting in the top five models sold list. The Toyota Hilux was the highest selling model in January at 3,591 vehicles sold, and the Toyota Prado came in fifth with 2,566 vehicles sold.

  2. Ford Ranger (3,245 vehicles sold)
  3. Mazda CX-5 (3,213 vehicles sold)
  4. Mitsubishi Triton (2,876 vehicles sold)

The first month of the new year saw 75,863 vehicles sold in total – a decrease of 4.8% from last January’s figures.

Sale declines were evident across the nation, with New South Wales recording a fall in sales of 9.8% from January 2021, and the Australian Capital Territory decreasing by 9.7% in the same period.

The only state or territory that saw an increase in car sales compared to last January was Tasmania, which improved by 15.4%.

Accounting for this drop in sales figures, FCAI Chief Executive, Tony Weber, said: “The microprocessor shortage and the pandemic’s impact on supply chains continues into 2022. This is an issue impacting markets all over the globe. Despite this, consumer interest, inquiry, and the fundamental demand for new cars in Australia remains strong.”

“Manufacturers are continuing to work hard to address supply chain and production issues. We are also experiencing bottlenecks in having vehicles processed from some Australian ports. We will continue to work with all parties involved to resolve the issue,” he said.
