Vehicle purchases ended the financial year with a bang, with the latest data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) recording its highest June result since 2018.

124,926 new vehicles were delivered during June 2023, according to the FCAI, an increase of 25% year on year. June is typically a strong month for vehicle sales, as this is when manufacturers and dealerships typically slash prices to maximise end of financial year profits.

The sale of zero and low-emission vehicles continues to grow, with 16.6% of all vehicles sold being battery electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid models.

In fact, the Tesla Model Y was the second highest selling vehicle in June, recording 5,560 sales. It came in behind the Toyota Hi-Lux with 6,142 sales, and ahead of the popular Fod Ranger, with 5,334 vehicles sold in June.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said: “The early adopters of the new powertrain technology continue to push up the sales of electric vehicles across the country.”

“The steady introduction of new battery electric models across all model segments at more competitive price points is critically important as we deal with the challenges of supplying electric vehicles that meet business and personal consumer needs at prices the mainstream buyers can afford,” Mr Webber said.
