The Tesla Model 3 has reached new heights on the list of most popular Australian cars, according to new figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

The January 2023 car sales data from the FCAI shows that the Tesla Model 3 was the third highest selling car in the market.

This is the first time a pure battery electric model has been ranked so highly. In addition, the MG ZS, which includes battery electric variants, and the Mitsubishi Outlander which includes plug-in hybrid variants were also in the top 10.

In fact, sales of battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles made up 12.28% of monthly sales, (10,426).

If you’re considering purchasing a vehicle this year you’re not alone, with the latest figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) showing that the sale of vehicles jumped 11.9% year-on-year in January.

The new year can be a popular time to buy a new or used car as dealerships may offer clearance sales for older models, as the new models start to roll in and become more attractive options in February and March.

Top selling car models in January 2023

  1. Ford Ranger - 4,749 sales
  2. Toyota Hi-Lux - 4,131 sales
  3. Tesla Model 3 - 2,927 sales
  4. Mazda CX-3 - 2,417 sales
  5. Mazda CX-5 - 2,189 sales

Last year, the government launched several incentives and improvements designed to bolster the uptake of electric and hybrid vehicles. This includes $2 million for the New South Wales state government to develop new EV infrastructure, and the rolling out of 3,500 chargers across tourist locations, like museums and wineries.

If February is the month you decide to purchase an electric or hybrid vehicle, make the car loan search a little easier by comparing some of RateCity’s top-rated green car loan options.

To help take the sting out of the cost of some sustainable vehicles, green car loan lenders typically offer discounted interest rates to eligible customers to encourage and reward Australians making more green choices.

So you can easily compare car loan options, RateCity has ranked the top-rated car loans on our Leaderboard page, using our comprehensive, Real Time Ratings™ system.

Real Time Ratings™ gives each car loan a score out of five, based on cost and flexibility. But unlike other ratings systems that rank their products once or twice a year, our Real Time Ratings™ system ranks products live as you use the site, helping you make a more relevant short list.

(Rankings are correct at the time of publishing. Please note lenders may trade places on the list as interest rates and fees change and RateCity’s tracker reflects these movements.)
