If you struggle to achieve your financial goals, maybe you should try discussing them with the person who knows you best – yourself.

According to a new study from National Australia Bank (NAB), Australians that talk to themselves about their financial goals are 29% more likely to achieve them than those who don’t.

Other findings from the NAB study include:

  • Only 15% of Australians talk to themselves on a regular basis about what they really want.
  • Nearly three quarters of Aussies (71%) don’t have a firm idea of what they want from life.
  • Around two in five Australians (41%) never set goals for themselves.

NAB general manager of customer experience, Lara Bourguignon, said that this study marks the start of a new initiative across NAB to initiate more meaningful conversations with customers, help them identify what they really want, and provide appropriate support:

“For example, a customer may come to us wanting to save, but if they have clarity about what they are saving for, we can help them even more. Being really clear on the goal and the outcome enables us to help them stay on track.”

The research, conducted by IPSOS on behalf of NAB, was based on a nationally representative sample of over 1000 Australians, aged 18 to 70.
