Points chasing, also known as points hacking, is a widely-embraced credit card strategy that may potentially offset your airfare expenses. This method revolves around applying for credit cards with generous sign-up bonus point offers, then spending these points - and not your own savings - on plane tickets.

The bonus Qantas frequent flyer points available this month could take you not only around Australia, but to international destinations, such as Hawaii or Europe.

Let’s explore the credit card issuers offering Qantas frequent flyer points on sign up on the RateCity database, as well as how far your points could take you.

The risks of points chasing with credit cards

Before you decide to get a credit card just for the bonus points, it’s crucial that you ensure you can comfortably meet any eligibility criteria set by the credit card company. It may be worthwhile conducting a thorough assessment of your financial situation and the credit card's terms and conditions before you apply.

If you apply for one of these credit cards and are rejected, it will negatively affect your credit history and may lower your credit score. Credit card companies often set specific eligibility criteria. These can include minimum income threshold and minimum spending requirements in the first few months of holding the credit card to earn the bonus points.

Before applying, ensure you can meet these criteria comfortably so that you do not risk hurting your credit score, and you aren’t pressured to spend more than you can afford.

It’s worth noting that this credit card strategy tends to better suit those who can afford to pay off their balance in full each statement period. If you struggle with paying off your credit card, or tend to overspend, this strategy may not suit your lifestyle or budget.

There's more to a credit card than just the points it offers, and your financial well-being should always come first. It's important to compare a range of factors like interest rates, fees, and perks like complimentary travel insurance, before singing on the dotted line.
