Where could your rewards points take you?

Looking for a credit card that can take you to Europe with bonus points on sign up? RateCity research shows there are currently five credit cards offering over 110,000 Qantas frequent flyer bonus points on sign up, which is typically how many that are needed to purchase a return flight through points.

The latest RateCity research also shows that there are 22 credit cards offering enough bonus points to take eligible applicants from Sydney to Melbourne return, and 19 that may take you as far as a Sydney to Perth return trip.

Other destinations are within reach from bonus credit card points, without the higher fees and interest rates, as well as the steep minimum spending limits, often associated with the credit cards that offer the greatest amount of bonus points. You may be able to purchase a return flight to Honolulu, Bali, or Singapore with your bonus points on sign up.

From the RateCity database

According to the RateCity database (accurate as of 31/03/2022):

  • The average purchase rate is 16.16%
  • The average annual fee is $113.58

It’s important to keep in mind that purchase rates and annual fees are generally higher than average for rewards credit cards offering large sign up bonus points. The card issuers may also have higher minimum spending limits as they are often designed as premium credit cards for customers with higher incomes.

These costs typically help to pay for credit card rewards programs and are to be expected when shopping for higher tier credit cards. But if paying for higher annual fees and purchase rates doesn’t suit your budget, there are lower rate and fee options available. Use the above figures during your comparison as a benchmark to help you identify how options fit on a scale of high to low fees and rates.
