How to transfer Flybuys to Velocity
In Australia, many businesses encourage customers to buy their products or services by offering loyalty rewards. For instance, if you apply for a Flybuys account, you can earn reward points when shopping at more than 20 different retailers, including Coles, Target, Bunnings, Officeworks and KMart.
Similarly, if you often travel using Virgin Australia flights, you can earn Velocity reward points through their exclusive membership program or via a Velocity-partnered credit card. You should remember to carry these cards or provide your membership number when paying for your shopping or flights to receive points. Alternatively, you can also use the points to pay for eligible purchases if you have accumulated a sufficient amount.
Also, most reward programs allow members to transfer their points to other affiliated rewards programs, with some conditions. This is true for Flybuys members, who can transfer rewards to a linked Velocity Frequent Flyer account.
However, it’s important to be aware that you cannot transfer Velocity points back to your Flybuys account.
If you are signing up for any rewards program, consider finding out if you can earn and use more points by linking to partner programs, using specific credit cards, or shopping at certain supermarkets or retail outlets.
How do you transfer Flybuys to Velocity Points?
Firstly, you’ll need to be a member of both the Flybuys and Velocity rewards programs. You can link the two accounts by logging into your Flybuys account portal and visiting the Velocity partner page. You can then visit this page to transfer your accumulated Flybuys points to your Velocity account or set up an automatic points transfer.
So there’s no confusion, here are the steps you’ll need to follow:
- Login to your Flybuys account.
- Ensure you have linked your Flybuys and Velocity accounts.
- Enter the amount of Flybuys points you would like to redeem for Velocity Points.
- Allow up to 48 hours for Velocity Points to be credited to your linked account.
The minimum transfer is 1,000 Flybuys points, for which you’ll receive 500 Velocity Points. This means that you get 1 Velocity point for every 2 Flybuys points you transfer. Additional flybuys points can be transferred in 1,000 point increments. If you choose the auto transfer option, a transfer is initiated every time you earn 1,000 Flybuys points.

Earning Status Credits through Flybuys
Virgin Australia’s Velocity frequent flyer program also offers members the ability to earn Velocity Status Credits in addition to points. While you earn Velocity Points directly every time you fly on select Virgin Australia flights, your status determines the number of points you get. Earning Status Credits, which depends on your journey’s sector and flying distance, and your ticket class, ensures you maintain or upgrade your membership level.
For instance, if you travel from Brisbane to Perth - one of the longest domestic flights in Australia - you may be eligible to earn up to 105 Status Credits. Check the Velocity rewards page to confirm the Velocity Points and Status Credits you are likely to earn before booking your flight.
If you have linked your Flybuys account to your Velocity account you’ll automatically earn one Velocity Status Credit for every $100 worth of eligible purchases (up to 10 credits per month) across Coles, Coles Online, Liquorland and First Choice Liquor Market.
You’ll need to remember to scan your Flybuys card when making purchases, although you will not need to transfer any points to earn the Status Credits. Further, since you cannot transfer either Velocity Points or Status Credits to your Flybuys account, you can choose not to transfer your Flybuys points automatically if you prefer using them for shopping rather than travel. You could, for instance, use the points to book flights and hotels through Flybuys travel.
What can I do with Velocity points?
You can use any Velocity points you accumulate to book your next Virgin Australia or affiliated flight, or upgrade your airfare. You can also use the points to pay for your travel partially through the airline’s Points + Pay system. Additionally, you can check Virgin Australia’s website to find out the cash value of the points you want to redeem and other ways to spend them.

Keep in mind that Flybuys and Velocity Points are subject to expiration, so it’s crucial to use them before they lapse.
