New research from Suncorp Group's AAMI brand, has highlighted the most at-risk times of day, and suburbs for shopping centre car park collisions. It is a timely reminder to take time this silly season to ensure that your car insurance policy is the best fit for you.

Analysis of more than 23,000 car park insurance claims across the country (from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023) showed that the greatest number of collisions in shopping centre car parks come - to no surprise - during the Christmas holiday season. December recorded 2,423 indicents, followed by January with 2,053 indicents.

In fact, the research showed that there are 22% more car park crashes in December than the monthly average throughout the rest of the year.

Friday, followed by Saturday and Thursday, were found to be the worst days of the week for shopping centre car park collisions. The most risky times to drive were between midday and 4pm.

AAMI Motor Claims Manager Leah James said: "It's the busiest time of year for shopping centres, which transform into the 'Hunger Games' of parking, as desperate shoppers battle it out to find a car park.

“Busy shopping centres mean crazy car parks, and unfortunately with that comes an increase in accidents,” said Ms James.

"A particular danger to watch-out for in car parks this year are electric vehicles. With so many now on our roads, both drivers and pedestrians need to be on the lookout for these as they are virtually silent, so you can't rely on engine noises to alert you that one is creeping up or reversing,” she said.

Is your car insurance prepared for Christmas collisions?

While you prepare to battle it out at the shopping centre this holiday season, it’s important to know that your car insurance policy is on your side

Take a few moments to review the terms and conditions outlined in your policy. Check for details on the type of coverage provided for accidental damage to your vehicle resulting from collisions. What exclusions, if any, are outlined in regards to accidents? Some policies may not cover certain types of accidents, such as those involving reckless driving.

It's crucial to understand the extent of your policy coverage and any conditions that might affect your ability to make a claim in the event of an accident. Be sure to also compare premium costs with other providers, as you may find that other insurance options are cheaper than when you last signed up.
