What are no contract phone plans?

If freedom and flexibility is important to you, you may be considering a no contract phone plan. No contract phone plans are postpaid plans with no lock-in contracts. Rather than signing up for a plan over a fixed term, you simply pay your bill when it arrives each month and can cancel anytime you like.

No contract phone plans typically don’t come with a phone, so you’ll need to use one you already have or buy a new one outright. For this reason, no contract phone plans may also be referred to as SIM-only postpaid plans, or BYO plans.

What are the benefits of no contract phone plans?

They offer flexibility

No contract phone plans offer the kind of flexibility that standard phone contracts simply can’t. Not being tied to a contract for an extended period of time means you can switch plans or providers when need be. Some of the instances in which you may find yourself needing to opt out of an existing phone plan include the following:

  • You move house and your network doesn’t offer sufficient coverage in your new location.
  • You get the opportunity to relocate overseas.
  • You’re not happy with the customer service provided by your existing network provider.
  • Your requirements change and your current plan doesn’t offer all the features you need.
  • You’ve found a better deal on offer from a different network provider.

They tend to be more affordable

Because no contract phone plans don’t come with a device, your monthly bill will generally be more affordable as you are only paying for the service. Depending on your choice of phone, adding the cost of it to a phone contract has the potential to significantly increase your monthly expenses – even when spread across a 12- or 24-month plan.

They can bridge the gap between standard contracts

If you’ve just reached the end of your standard phone contract and have paid off your phone, but you don’t feel an urgent need for an upgrade, switching to a no contract phone plan with your existing device could be a great way to save a bit of money while retaining flexibility.

That way, as soon as find that you are ready to upgrade, you’re able to do so without hassle.

What are the disadvantages of no contract phone plans?

There’s one key disadvantage associated with no contract phone plans – you’ll need to have your own device. If you’ve already got a fully functioning mobile phone in good condition, this shouldn’t be an issue. But if you need to upgrade, you’ll have to make sure you have the cash on hand to pay for it outright – which can sometimes be upwards of $1000 depending on your choice of phone.

Who provides no contract phone plans?

Most major mobile phone service providers now offer no contract phone plans, as they recognise the increasing demand by consumers for more flexibility. Browse RateCity’s database of no contract phone plans to find a provider that offers what you’re looking for.

How do you compare no contract phone plans?

Comparing no contract phone plans and choosing one that’s right for you will ultimately come down to how you use your mobile phone on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Here are some of the features to consider when comparing your options:

  • Network access: Some no contract plans will offer 5G network access, while others may only offer 4G. Be aware that 5G may not be available in certain locations, regardless of the plan you choose.
  • Data inclusions: If you primarily use your home or work Wi-Fi and rarely access your phone data, a smaller data package may suit you. But, if you spend a lot of time away from Wi-Fi and rely on access to your phone data for much of the day, you may need to consider opting for a plan with a larger data package to avoid excess data charges.
  • Calls and text: Most providers offer unlimited standard national calls and text on all of their plans. If you have friends and family overseas, you may want to compare international calls and text inclusions and costs.
  • Advertised cost: The advertised cost is the amount you will be charged by the provider each billing period. Typically, monthly billing periods range between 28 to 31 days, so it’s worth keeping this in mind when comparing costs.
